Staff Bios

Tony Calvello, BA, CSCS Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

"Coach Cal" started coaching at SI in 1987 in the football and basketball programs. After graduating from SF State in 1989, he entered the classroom where he taught English for 6 years. During that period, he continued to coach football and run the weight room. In 1995, he became Facilities Coordinator and Director of Transportation; he left the football program to become the full time strength and conditioning coach for the athletic department. Since then, he has helped develop and supervise programs for many teams: Baseball, Basketball, Crew, Football, Track and Field.and Volleyball.

Tony is a graduate of SI ('84), where he played football for 3 years and basketball for 1 year. He lives in Pacifica with his wife Diane and daughter Nicole (SI Class of 2011) and their 4 cats.

Certified by the National Strength Coaches Accosiation as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Tony has also completed course work in Adolescent Nutrition, Medicine Ball Training, Plyometrics, and Advanced Core Training through the C.H.E.K. Institute.

Aside from his own strength training, Coach Cal enjoys lunchtime basketball and his addiction to mountain biking.

Other certifications: Red Cross Life Guard, CPR-AED, First Aid and CIF Trainer.

Kimble Torres, BS, Assistant Strength Coach

After graduating from the prep in 2001 where he played 4 years of football and threw shot and discus on the track and field team, Kimble played four years of football at University of St. Thomas in Minnesota. He graduated with a degree in Biology and is currently a financial planner. "Coach Toro" runs a tight ship in the weight room, with rigorous abdominal routines and an eye for perfection in all olympic technique. We're happy to have him back!

 

Karim Derqaoui, BS, Assistant Strength Coach

Karim is a graduate student in Exercise and Sport Science at San Francisco State University. He comes to us from his most recent job helping with player development at Marin Academy and University High School where he worked with soccer athletes. Karim will be in charge of the Wildcat Readiness Program and assist with team workouts. His certifications include: Health and Fitness Instructor (HFI), ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), NSCA, Personal/Fitness Trainer, YMCA San Francisco andSAQ Advanced Trainer, SAQ International.

 

Steve Branstetter, Assistant Strength Coach

Steve is a native San Franciscan who received his B.A. from San Francisco State University. After college, he lived in New York City and worked as a personal trainer at Park Slope Fitness. He also attended acting school for both film and television. He returned home to San Francisco and now works as an Advantage Personal Trainer at the Sports Club LA. He also owns his own company, B-Now Fitness, which provides in-home fitness training for athletes and pre-natal/post-partum mothers. His credentials include National Academy of Sports Medicine, SPARQ Training, and CPR certification. Steven is delighted to join the St. Ignatius family as a Weight Room Assistant and as Frosh Girls Basketball Assistant Coach in 2007-8 season!

John Moura, Assistant Strength Coach

John works for PG&E and brings a passion for strength training and enthusiasm for coaching. He works primarily with the Track and Field Program in the Spring, overseeing the workout for 150 athletes! He will be helping out in the Fall and Winter this year too.

Kori Jenkins, Assistant Strength Coach

Kori grew up in San Diego and started her venture up the coast where she spent five years at UC Santa Barbara. The first four years she completed her bachelor degrees; one in Communications and the other in Exercise and Health Sciences. She also played four years of field hockey for the Gauchos and stayed a fifth as head coach of the UCSB field hockey team.

In 2004 Kori made her way up to the bay area and became a certified Personal Trainer. As well as full time personal trainer at Crunch and ClubOne, she is the St. Ignatius varsity head field hockey coach and contributes to strength and conditioning program at SI as a weight room assistant. Kori is NPTI (National Personal Training Institute), Spin and CPR certified.



Marla Bottner, MS, ATC  Head Athletic Trainer

Marla started working at St. Ignatius part time in 1988 and returned full time in 1990 and has been here ever since. Marla grew up in southern California ,a graduate of U.S Grant High School in Van Nuys. Prior to working at St. Ignatius, Marla worked at Union Square Center for Rehabilitation which specialized in back rehabilitation for workers compensation injuries.

Marla holds a BA from San Francisco State in Pre-Physical Therapy (1986) and also a Masters in Education (1992). Marla enjoys working with the different sport teams and has enjoyed watching the school grow especially from all boys through the co-ed transition.

Robert Assadurian, MS Assistant Athletic Trainer

"Rob", a native of San Francisco, is a graduate of Raul Wallenberg Traditional High School ('92) where he lettered in baseball and swimming. His career at St. Ignatius started in the late fall of 1998 as the assistant athletic trainer. He holds a Bachelors' Degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Athletic Coaching from San Francisco State University, a Masters' Degree in Sports & Fitness Management from the University of San Francisco, and is a board certified athletic trainer. In addition to athletic training, he has a background in injury rehabilitation and over a decade of work experience in aquatics as a swimming instructor, coach, and as a lifeguard, which he continues to this day. In addition to his work at St. Ignatius, Rob has worked with former San Francisco 49ers Merton Hanks and Eddie Taylor as an athletic trainer during their annual youth development football camp (Merton Hanks & Eddie Taylor Football Camp). Also, he has been the athletic trainer for the annual "Battle of the Bay", a charity basketball game between the 49ers and the Raiders as well as other charity basketball events hosted by the Oakland Raiders. During his tenure at St. Ignatius, Rob has been fortunate to experience many facets of the school which includes, but not limited to, sports information, coaching, and proctoring. In addition to his athletic training responsibilities, he also teaches in the Physical Education Department.

Away from school, Rob enjoys running, biking, and playing golf. He resides in San Francisco.

Steve Bluford, MAed, BS  Physical Education Department Chair, Head Football Coach

Steve is in his 13th year teaching Physical Education and Psychology. Steve is the Head Varsity FootballCoach and co-moderates the Association of African American Students. Steve has a B.A. in Psychology from the University of CAlifornia, Santa Barbara (1989); M.A. in Education from California State University, San Francisco (1999). Steve currently is the Department Chair for Physical Education. "Coach Blu" teaches the Intro to Weights and Advanced Weight Lifitng courses offered through the PE department.

John Regalia, MAed, BA  Math Teacher and Football Head Strength Coach

John Regalia, Assisant Varsity Coach/Defensive Coordinator
John Regalia ’93 enters his 10th year on the football coaching staff, his 9th on the Varsity level. For the past five years he
has been the Defensive Coordinator for the Varsity. "Coach Rags " designed and coordinates the football strength program.

Regalia competed in football for four years while a student at SI and went on to play three seasons of football at Oregon
St. University. He is a 1997 graduate of Oregon St. and began his coaching career as an assistant at Crescent Valley High
School in Corvallis, Oregon during his senior year of college. He resides in San Francisco with his wife; fellow faculty
member and Head Women’s Cross Country Coach Elizabeth Regalia.
