Magis Social and Cultural Support Programs: 2009-2010

Greetings from the Magis Director...

The Magis Program at St. Ignatius College Preparatory (SI) provides social and cultural support to students who are first-generation college-bound, low-income and/or traditionally underrepresented students at SI. Many of the support services that we offer are shared below. I am personally excited and honored to be working as the Magis Director.  My hope is that Magis empowers young people to become self-advocates, to accept the differences that they and others embody and to understand the process of navigating an often complicated and tricky educational system. The intentions of the program are also to offer diversity awareness and identity formation for all of the members of our community. The Magis Program exemplifies some of the true tenets of a Jesuit education and I am blessed to be a part of it.

Western Regional Jesuit High School Black Summitt African American students and their allies meet at Bellermine, Tacoma to discuss issues of black identity at Jesuit schools. The program includes guest speakers, performers and panels.	MAAC Dinner   Students who receive a GPA of 3.3 or above on their semester grades are treated to a dinner celebration for their efforts.
College Visits Visits to local colleges and universities include campus tours, student panels and shadow opportunities with college students.	Community The Magis Office is a safe space for all, irrespective of difference.
Magis Movie Days Monthly film presentations that tackle race, gender, class, sexuality and other issues of identity. Followed by discussion.	Middle School Tutoring Students have the opportunity to tutor middle school students at the bi-weekly Magis Homework Academies.
