Studying Skillful Teaching

A Course for Novice & Veteran teachers from Research for Better Teaching, Acton MA

Course Summary

This course is designed to give teachers who have the intellectual, emotional and psychological capacity to reach children the skills to develop into excellent teachers. Beginning with the knowledge base on learning and effective instruction, teachers identify and master the details of effective classroom management, the principles of instruction that lead to clarity and learning for all, the ability to motivate a wide range of learners, and the capacity to design curriculum and instructional experiences that engage students in learning what the standards for their courses require.

The foundation of this course is the belief in and respect for the complexity of teaching.  The course asks and seeks to answer five key questions:

  1. What accounts for student learning?
  2. How do we focus students on what is important?
  3. How do we monitor learning and adjust instruction?
  4. What does effective effort mean for teachers and students?
  5. Why is developing professional communities essential for our growth as teachers?

Participants will:

  • study the knowledge base on teaching.
  • appreciate and expand their own professional repertoires.
  • experiment with and share strategies and principles for classroom practice.
  • analyze video clips of real teachers in action
  • experience effective collegial dialogues, problem solving, and observations.
